Sohostrut's Tony Talks to the new found kings of Power-Pop

Tell us more about the band who does what and why ?

Stocky Lead vox, Glenn Lead guitar and vox, Matt bass and vox drums erm..?
I right the songs and put them down as best I can but my playing is crap so I leave it to Glenn and Matt to make them sound like a polished song, but I do have a lot to say about orchestration and drum patterns as I always have a very clear idea of what I want.

What's all this Mod looking image about then and those Rickenbacker's are u hoping to revive an image and sound-Do any of you have Scooters or any involvement on the Mod scene ?

We don't own scooters as we have put everything we have into equipment, and a van gets us to gigs with all of our gear, it's a sacrifice we had to make. We are going mad to play at a mod convention or scooter rally but haven't had any offers although we have made many enquiries.

"Suicide Bomber" now that could have ben a really risky frowned upon song to release, whats the reviews been like and has it caused u any grief.

We made the front page of a couple of local papers and a couple in London with that one but over all it's been positive and we are looking forward to headlining @ The Carling Academy, Islington in London on the 24th Oct.

Tell us bout the Vodka Records deal ? Vodka is owned by a couple of local lads who are trying to do what they can for the local scene and they don't always get it right but they do always try.

What are ur views on the way bands and the listening public have embraced Guitar bands again over the past few years.

If it wasn't for that change in what the public want we wouldn't be doing so well so thank god for that. We would probably still be doing what we do weather the public wanted it or not as we love what we do.

Heros and Villains..What makes u all tick, and who do u wish had never picked up a guitar ?

we all love guitar bands with punch "The Jam" to the "The Sex Pistols" to "Oasis" and "Queens Of The Stone Age" , we hate EMO! "Radiohead" and the like you know what I mean "I'm really emotional, I was bullied at school (who wasn't) and I'm going to cut my wrists" all that sort of shit. Get over it and get on with it we say.

Gigs..where has been the best shows so far this year ?

We do a show in a little local call "The Commercial" in "Burnley" and it's a real buzz they are total fans and always leave us on a high. The bus gig was the show stopper thou as it was a dream come true, I mean who doesn't want to do that!

Tell us more about the open top Bus gig in Camden, what was all that about who's idea wa it and who funded it all ?

Vodka arranged it we just turned up and did it, we were dressed as suicide bombers wearing masks and plastic explosives taped to our chests (See the pics on our site) and were watched by approx 2000 people in the Camden market and probably every CCTV camera in London it was fucking class.

Have you boys gone full time or are u still doing day jobs ??

We are full time and we do devote all of our time to writing and gigging at the mo but the money is still a way down the road.

.What web sites do u often check out Music ones/Has MYSPACE been good for you ?

we don't have a lot of time to sit and check out other bands but myspace is an important promotional tool for every band.

.Are U football Fans ?

Not so much me or Glenn we both support Sunderland but it doesn't rule our every waking hour, Matt however is a total football nut and huge Sunderland fan, we have to schedule gigs around games because of it but that's not a bad thing because we get an excuse to go and get pissed.

.What the plan for the coming months ?

We are finishing off our debut album "A S B O Generation" and Vodka are arranging a UK Tour for next year.

Sum up the band in 3 words.

Exiting! Dynamic! controversial!

Sanchogrey. Glenn Whisker - Guitar/Backing vocals, John Stocky - Guitar/Lead vocals, Matt Owen (The Squire) Maguire - Bass/Backing vocals, Adam Barnes - Drums/Percusion and Backing vocals. What a powerful band and with John Stocky on vocals this band have an edge, were talking a guitar band, not really or sounding Britpop in anyway. But with their roots firmly in the late Punk era, the powerpop side of the coin..

crashing Rickenbacker

'Suicide Bomber' opens with more than a hint of early Jam,and you can't ignore that parts of this sound just like The Jam's 'Strange Town', esp the riffs and hooks "there's a pale skinned man lives in my street with freckles on his skin and carrots in his hair' (wierd) there's is an insight to some good songwriting. The song runs along with crashing Rickenbackers and gruff vocals and more La La La's than 'The FutureHeads' manage to put into their tunes and the image is one of Weller and the boys circa '77.
