Psychedelica Volume 2 Compilation CD (Northern Star Records)

Second Volume of psyched out tunes from Northern Star records, with a worldwide scope for far out vibes from the intense to the blissful.

The Formula

Band/Artist + ‘Song Title' = Review

The December Sound + ‘Kill Me' = Manic technological beats and jagged guitars, on this spaced out epic that takes off into outer space with a melancholic vocal and a huge soundscape. ‘Kill Me' has a sound similar in vein to some of Primal Screams more far out moments.

The Voices + ‘The Sound Of Young America' = An upbeat shoegazing trip is a melodic delight with layer upon layer of effects laden guitars and a super dreamy vocal. ‘The Sound of Young America' is a candy psyched out delight, but all played at a fast pace, this a buzzing tune.

The Daysleepers + ‘Threnody'= Echoed out reverbing melodic vocals, jangling guitars, and a mid paced beat that builds into a hypnotic crescendo. ‘Threnody' is tuneful slice of modern psychedelic sound-skyscraping.

Sunsplit + ‘All I want' = A rocking tune with chunky guitars, a mad fxs led vocal, and lots of cool ohh yeahs. All I Want an upbeat piece of psyched out sunshine pop, with rock'n'roll riffs and handclaps, a sweet tune. I'll have to check out ‘Sunsplit as I dig this short and very sweet tune.

Goldrush + ‘There's A World'= Starting with acoustic guitars, this tune opens out into a riff-tastic Cream/Vanilla Fudge style guitar freak out duelling with the organ. Late 60s style rock with big riffs and a huge organ.

Floorian + ‘Heavium' = A raga style intro, rumbling drums and chanting style close harmony vocals add to this atmospheric song. The distant echoing guitar backing up the guitar riffs, adds to the strange atmosphere of ‘Heavium' that segues into backwards guitar heaven.

Flowers Of Hell + ‘Compound Fractures' = Baudelaire influenced combo proceed with a piano led epic sweep with strings, Theremin, and horns. ‘Compound Fractures' is a cinematic instrumental full of lament.

Perfect Blue + ‘Empty Dreams' = Krautrock style groove with repeating motifs on organ and various sound fxs to create a hypnotic ambient vibe, that burrow slowly into your consciousness. ‘Empty Dreams' is cleverly arranged with a sense of minimalism and rhythm.

Moon + ‘Dopamine' = Echoing electric piano, wonky sounds and various oscillations. Dopamine is an experimental music piece with that early 70s Krautrock/ambient feel, strike out into the galaxy brothers and sisters.

Hopewell + ‘Hello Radio' = Big chiming guitars and a massive chorus, but given the backdrop of an oddly arranged song. It's a mosaic maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, but when they go into the hello radio refrain, it is a proper sugar shaking bliss. ‘Hello Radio' is a whacky tune with a whacky arrangement.

The Yours + ‘Missed Call' = A driving tune that blasts along with a reverbed soaked vocal. ‘Missed Call is an upbeat catchy indie tune with wild sound flourishes on the guitars, giving the song that bit of psychedelic pizzazz.

Air Cav + ‘ Alliance ' = Wah'd out guitars introduce this monster of a tune. When the beat kicks in, melodic guitars chime with a catchy sugar shaking riff happily skipping along in the background. The heartfelt vocal injects a heavy dose of feeling onto this epic psychedelic indie rock tune.

Riff Random + ‘Dead Eyes' = Echoing guitars, melodic vocals and cool harmonies that sweep along on catchy upbeat tune. Mad freaking out moments are thrown in for good measure, so let those shimmering-ly distorted aeons speak.

Satsangi + ‘Iodine' = A rocking number with female vocals and a sax that gives the tune plenty of sleaze. Unsure whether this tune counts as psychedelic, but the tough guitar riff is suitably raucous.

Soft Hearted Scientist + ‘Brother Sister' = Melodic riffs, refrains and motifs galore. A harp style effect adds to the whimsical nature of the song, and there's a great psychedelic lyric too. ‘Brother Sister' has a great psyche bubblegum sunshine pop chorus and is one of the compilation's highlights for me.

Say Jansfield + ‘The Lonely Piano' = Piano and close harmonies, but with a demented song arrangement. ‘The Lonely Piano' flutters far out into Brain Wilson style sunshine, sweet.

Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring + ‘Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind' = A sweet sensation of psyche pop with plinky plonks, harps, simple guitar riffs and catchy slivers of sweetness. The close harmonies on ‘Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind' create a great sugar shaking pop tune commotion, a heartfelt classic.
