INTERVIEW
BY DAVE LAZER of DBM
Who are you all and what do you play/who writes the songs?
I'm
dave , I do singing and guitaring. rob plays guitar , baco plays bass and wolfe
plays the drum. we all sing. its like a democracy.
Who or what makes the DBM rock?
lots
of things. we all really like model villages, they're fucking great. we like brandy,
but we've been banned from drinking it , the old british telecom logo was really
good. greggs the bakers, i really like andrew wk and hannah from s club 7.
Any other acts you would like to play the same bill as?
we're
playing with the proclaimers in middlesbourgh. bet that'll be fucking shit. we'd
like to play with the television personalities, i'd have liked to
have played
with guitar wolf but the bassist just died so i think they've split up
For
anyone out there who's not heard or seen the band, how would you say you sounded?
Angry
and happy at the same time. i don't really know why that is. we are a band that
you have to listen to loud.
And
how do you look tell us about the 'dress' influences?
we
look like a fucking mess. general wolfe has got the fucking stupidest trousers
in the world, anything we touch seems to get broken, so we tend to look like homeless
people.
Do
you guys prefer vintage instruments or is it all bang up to date?
I've
got a '65 gibson melody maker which has just been repaired, cos I smashed the
head off by accident. all our gear is really old, but thats not strictly through
choice. we just kind of ended up with a load of old shit really.
Whats
ur view on the so called britpop revival?
Dunno
really, I think its good that we're producing good bands again, but I think its
a lot better this time round. it's much more diverse. but you get a
load of
over-hyped crap like bloc party and the others it's music that sounds like cats
piss
Whats your
view of britpop circa '95
I
was about 10 when parklife came out and I loved it, loved definatly maybe
and I should coco but I also bought a lot of crap stuff like sleeper and
menswear cos I didn't know any better. pulp were good too. I think it was pretty
right wing really, very patriotic , very white. it was music with very little
black influence so Idon't think it really united people in the way it was made
out to. it got over run by cocaine and died. I remember in 1997 I was sat reading
nme and all Icould think was '1997 is fucking crap'.
What
kind of response do the band get in britain and the rest of europe?
people
tend to jump around alot, in belgium a mad man spent the who gig trying to pull
me off stage so he could stab me with a syringe, the bouncers didn't know what
to do. then some one got shot and the police locked us in the dressing room and
we had break out the back with our guitars and run off down the road.
Any
other european bands that you feel a kindship with or can recommend?
dogs
are great, you should check out a guy called jamie t, he's great. neil's children
are good too, they were with us in belgium for the who palarva with the mentalists.
Where
have been your best gigs?
I
really liked playing newcatle university, that was great. the geordies are pretty
up for it. koko was good too, the sound was amazing
We
saw your video on mtv, has that been helping you guys at all?
it
must be i suppose. i dont know if i like mtv though, it seems a bit like a gouvernment
and it has lots of flashing lights that tend to freak me out a
bit
Is
there a new single/album planned
yes,
but i'm not really allowed to say much. infact i cant say anything cos we tend
to be kept in the dark about these kind of things . i think the next single will
be 'to the ramones'
What
are your tunes about?
the
bnp, girlfriends, mental illness and drugs.
Sum
up the band in 3 mighty words?
Dustin's
Bar Mitzvah
Cheers
to the band for chatting to Sohostrut.
